Meet Evelyn: The Woman Who Inspired “Adopt a Reader”
Four months ago, Evelyn arrived on my doorstep, desperate for help. At 31 years old, she finally found the courage to ask someone to teach her to read—a skill she had struggled with her entire life.
After failing Grade 9 and being told it wasn’t worth returning to school, Evelyn entered the working world armed with just a Grade 8 certificate. Despite working hard, her lack of literacy skills limited her opportunities, leaving her in a low-paying job, earning below minimum wage.
When Evelyn came to us, she was diagnosed with severe dyslexia, reading and spelling at an 11-year-old level. But that didn’t stop her. Through fierce determination, she has made remarkable progress, improving her reading age by nearly four years in just a few months. Her dream of completing Grade 9 is now within reach, and we are in the process of enrolling her for 2025.
